What To Do If You’re In A Car Accident

It can be hard to think clearly right after an accident happens. Here are the top things to keep in mind:

Seek medical help: Your physical well-being is the most important thing. Call 911 if anyone has been seriously hurt.

Contact the police: If you have called 911, police will usually respond. If not, contact them. They are trained to manage accident scenes and help the people involved. The police report will provide vital information including the names of the parties involved. This information will be  helpful when you report an accident to your insurance agency.

Capture information about the traffic situation: If you are not hurt badly or if you can get someone else to do so, take photos of the vehicles involved, the accident scene as well as the environment in which it happened that might indicate situations like traffic conditions or obstructed visibility.

Move the vehicles if they are in the way of traffic and turn on flashers.

Capture information about the people involved in the accident: You’ll need driver’s license, insurance information, and contact details for the people involved.

Capture information about any witnesses and professionals involved in responding to the accident: If there are witnesses to the accident, try to get their contact information in case police are not able to interview them. If possible, also try to get names for people who respond to the accident, like EMT professionals.

Contact your insurance company, even if you are not at fault: Reporting all accidents may be required by your insurance policy.

These are the most important things to consider right after a car accident. If you were not at fault and have been injured or suffered losses that may not be covered by the at-fault driver’s insurance, please contact Shelbourne Law to help you determine if your situation merits a personal injury legal case.
